"... was to convince them that IT is the single best tool theyÂ’ll have throughout their careers as business leaders" .

So then, what do you think of Nick Carr's signature series of articles - 'IT Doesn't Matter?'

[On another note: having managed software developers for many years, I completely agree with your position on incentives - you can only tinker with them slowly and very, very carefully. The Law of Unintended Consequences applies, in spades!]

Based in France, I participated yesterday in a Round Table discussion about the relationship between 2.0 tools and company cultures. The question was raised: "Which comes first - the tools or the culture change?"
The panelists agreed that the two go hand in hand, although there was a fairly strong audience feeling that the culture change required a lot of change management before the tools could be used to full advantage. Personally I think if tools are put into place that let people experiment with new ways of working, ideas will emerge that the "tool placers" did not envisage.
I especially like what you said, Andrew, in the phrase "...they can also use information technology to essentially get out of the way and see what new ways of working emerge."
The first part of the sentence "IT lets them define and impose new ways of working" is trickier to do in reality. Impose is a strong word, and the outcome will depend very much on the culture and management style within the organisation.

As a recent college grad who can appreciate the benefit of IT, I'd like to think the vote you saw has something to do with the Generation of students you've taught. I believe students today realize, if not fully at least better than some others, how much IT really touches every aspect of a business. Perhaps they understand that by choosing B, they can have A as well; because the ability to change the IT infrastructure grants you so many liberties to change the benefits and incentives you can offer your employees.

In today's marketplace, IT is huge. Consumers expect that a company that they are dealing with is on top of their game. A good way to judge that is by consumer feed back and the ability of the IT department to bridge the consumer and company together.

Interesting read for sure.
