I've been working on a multi-client research project on redefining employee computing, and I cannot count the number of clients who have locked out social networking sites, even LinkedIn, or simply do not understand the “web2.0 thing.” Even for clients who are a bit more open in their thinking, are looking for “who has done this already…prove it.”

This is a great interview. I'm encouraged that there are companies in the world that are that open, tolerant, and courageous. One of the greatest barriers to adoption of social technologies is the lack of trust that companies have in their employees. Serena is so beyond that

So if you are in a company that is willing to tread in new waters, then you should take the plunge. Weve only seen benefits so far, and feel that our employees are all gaining immeasurably because of it. The first question companies should consider is “what is the corporate culture we are looking to create?” The answer to that question will dictate how you move forward.

I would like to challenge Bill Ives’ answer to the last question by asking him the following question:

“Would you like your bank, your hospital, your lawyer’s office to use Facebook as their Intranet, too?”

My honest answer would be “no, no way!”. And I think that’s an indication that Bill Ives is mainly talking about using Facebook as a {word of mouth, viral} marketing instrument (which is certainly fine in many cases) rather than about Facebook as a replacement for an Intranet.

When talking about confidentiality, we shouldn’t only talk about maliciously but also about accidentally released confidential information and how to prevent it.

And last but not least, there’s also the laws.

As for the confidential material we have purchased HiveLive’s collaboration platform as a supplement to Facebook. This is where we put confidential documents because we like HiveLive’s permissioning system for document management.
So we can put links to HiveLive via Facebook for employees to access these docs.

We are certainly happy to update everyone on how our move to Facebook and HiveLive progresses.
