Excellent post, Prof. McAfee! As usual!

Your post makes me think how businesses have struggled to cope with the changes in IT for the past so many decades, and it is still struggling. And the sobering thought is that it is not going to get any better, in fact it is going to get worse. It seems to me that the change that IT would bring in the next 2-3 years would be far be more than the change that we have witnessed in the last 10 years, and at an overwhelming pace.

Your post makes me think of the necessity of building a framework which will help business people grasp the importance of a new technology, and the implications of the technology for the business; and answer questions on how to exploit and manage it.

Agree. My company focuses on how automation and technologies like XML and document assembly can change the practice of law and specifically the creation of contracts. Technology now allows business users to create very structured and complex contracts through a web based interview without the need for a lawyer. And, using contextual tags within the contract data, companies can take it one step further and truly be able to understand and instantly analyze what is now typically a pile of paper in a file cabinet.

I like the metaphor. And I think you're right: we can't be sure of all of the ways that having this much computing power will disrupt existing industries or revolutionize the ways we live, learn or do business. There are, however, lessons that we can learn from history, as you pointed out in tracing how electrification was adopted in the business world.

What I *do* know is that I want to go to the “geek paradise that is the Deutsches Museum.” Here's hoping I can take my pocket supercomputer with me to capture the experience.
