Next Week: The Fray by the Bay

Next week I’m heading to Silicon Valley and San Francisco for two events. The advocacy group FWD.us has to date been focused largely on immigration, but is now taking up issues related to technological progress, innovation and growth, and the economic security of American workers.

These are exactly the topics Erik Brynjolfsson and I tackle in our book The Second Machine Age, so I’m thrilled about the new initiative from FWD and excited to help launch it next week.

I’m joining superstars Joe Lonsdale, Andrew Ng, and Laura Tyson for a panel discussion at Stanford on Wednesday, February 19. The topic is “Can Tech Rebuild the Middle Class and American Dream in the 21st Century?” We’ll be moderated by FWD president and founder Joe Green. I predict an enlightening conversation.

The next night my prediction is… painI’m just not sure whether I’ll be the one giving or receiving it.

I’ll be debating Peter Thiel on the same topic at Dropbox’s headquarters in San Francisco. I’ve talked with Peter enough to know that he’s formidably intelligent and quick on his feet, and that he and I don’t agree much at all on some fundamental issues. So like Ali and Foreman, we’re gonna get it on ’cause we don’t get along. (Actually, we get along really well, but we’re still gonna get it on.). We’ll be introduced by Dropbox’s Drew Houston and refereed moderated by Joe Green.

I’m preparing for this one by reading up, watching old Milton Friedman videos, and working to master Kate Hansen’s pre-competition routine. Anything else I should be doing?

Here are details for both events from FWD.us. Hope to see you there…
